Behind the Play mode active banner you have a Play button to exit, but probably it is hidden for you, so please try to set your inspector panel narrower to be able to use it.

I have the same problem. The solution you presented works but should not have to resize anything.
Every previous version of the SLS Play mode active popup has a cross that closed this popup, revealing the Play button. This version should have exactly the same way.

What is the idea behind removing the cross/close button?

We removed the ability to close this toast message because many people thought that this would also stop the play mode. This was a common problem.
