Esp32 rebooting - debugging

Hi,
I need some help.
I made a gauge in SquarelineStudio, and when I upload it to my esp32 with tft lcd. Everything works as it should.
Now where the issue comes:
-I want to fetch OBD2 data from car using ELM327- ( ELMduino -Powerbroker2 library ) via Bluetooth to feed data into the gauge UI.

-Now I’ve found 2 issues, and I dont know how to solve them.

-I’m using Esp32_Bluetooth_serial sketch (ELMduino) to connect my esp32 to ELM327 adapter.

When I add this code to my ui sketch

ELM_PORT.begin("ArduHUD", true);

  if (!ELM_PORT.connect("OBDII"))
  {
    DEBUG_PORT.println("Couldn't connect to OBD scanner - Phase 1");
    while(1);
  }

  if (!myELM327.begin(ELM_PORT, true, 2000))
  {
    Serial.println("Couldn't connect to OBD scanner - Phase 2");
    while (1);
  }

  Serial.println("Connected to ELM327");

The image on display corrupts and ESP32 goes into a boot loop.
-When I cut that code out. It al works as it should ( note, when i power the ESP32 i get noise on display for first second and it goes normally into the gauge UI)

-The second problem.
The loop that I use to read car Engine coolant temperature and parse it into ArcValue and Label value-
Screen corruped image - ESP32 in boot loop again.

This is the full code.

When i get it not to bootloop

i get this issue on the screen

Maybe it’s a memory issue? How can I reduce the size?

Something is not right.

When I upload my lvlgl ui, and combine it with some other sketch for reading canbus i get the same issue on the display, but it runs how it should in the serial monitor

The other library i tried and combined with mine uses

Global variables use 87948 bytes (26%) of dynamic memory, leaving 239732 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 327680 bytes.

that much space

Can someone have look a the code, am I doing something wrong?

// Display LED to NodeMCU pin VIN (or 5V, see below)
// Display SCK to NodeMCU pin D5
// Display SDI/MOSI  to NodeMCU pin D7
// Display DC (RS/AO)to NodeMCU pin D3
// Display RESET to NodeMCU pin D4 (or RST, see below)
// Display CS to NodeMCU pin D8 (or GND, see below)
// Display GND to NodeMCU pin GND (0V)

//
// The TFT RESET pin can be connected to the NodeMCU RST pin or 3.3V to free up a control pin

Maybe ELM lib get values slowly, then optimal use is place get data into next thread, not in lvgl.
Try comment out in loop lv_timer_handler, crash your code too ?
Ofcourse your LCD not work on this test.

when i coment out
lv_timer_handler in the loop It’s still stuck and re-booting

It boots normaly, all data is correct in serial monitor. But the screen is corrupted.
I also tried, using some other library (Arduino-CAN )- its data in the serial monitor is correct, but the screen is corrupted.

Am I doing something wrong in the start, when merging other library into this UI?

When I cut out the IF loop from setup (for elmduino)
I get to see the screen, but its again in boot loop

something is conflicting since i cant get anything to work together. Or im making the same mistake.

Do i have to set the flags when designing the UI ( i de check every flag, its not a touch screen) idea is i grab value from arduino and arc value updates and the text (label).

Reading through your posts it seems as if your interface configurations clash somehow. Are your TFT SPI and the ELM bloetooth configured on totally different resources in the background? If I read well both the UI-code alone and the ELM-code works, but using both together gives problems. If the problem is not your code (I didn’t spot out big mistakes there), it might be some common resource, maybe the timing/interrupts or maybe global memory fields. As a general rule, LVGL itself should be ran in a single thread and it’s not advisable to set LVGL objects in different threads, just in the main loop beside lv_timer_handler. Just some tips. Maybe you can get some more tips from LVGL or ESP forums.

Hi Hermit, i appreciate the comment. But i don’t understand what are you asking.
How do you mean configured on different resources in the background?

-Sorry I’m a bit new to all of this so i don’t understand the terminology.

I’ve hit a brake thru. Eureka!
I’ve been reading a bit of documentation and something came across that loops should be put in lv_timer_handler();

So when i put my ELMDUINO if loop that is in the setup() in lv_timer_handler();
the display comes back to life, and no more boot loop!

@Amer7: I meant hardware resources, like using the same registers/memory/pins on an MCU. Sometimes the different interfaces share a pin/memory area on a microcontroller, C toolkit should take care of those resources, but with the configuration by the user. (I guess it’s sdkconfig in case of ESP-IDF).

I don’t know what you mean by ‘if’ loop, loops usually need an if to determine if they’re done or not. Anyway, it’s a good idea to avoid an infinite/long-running loop as such in setup() and put it in the loop() instead. I guess the setup.h first sets things up in the background then enables the loop() as an interrupt on the device. So if you use the same global/common variables in the setup() and loop() they might clash if ran in ‘parallel’ (need to be careful about common/global variables when you’re using interrupths/threads). Maybe if you loop in your main loop forever the interrupt-initialization doesn’t happen and that’s why the lv_timer_handler() doesn’t run and refresh the display. This all depends on what the ESP software (drivers) does in the background.
So yes, cyclically called functions (‘if loop’?) should go into loop() beside lv_timer_handler(), and every functions being in the loop() should be non-blocking, i.e. completing & returning in a short time (ideally much less than the cca 10ms period of the loop(), so your UI stays responsive (can be updated by lv_timer_handler cyclically in 5…20ms periods).

Thank you for the explanation.
Well the Elmduino for sure doesn’t use pins- this is over bluetooth.

I think something happened in the memory as you say in the background process.

I’m figuring things as I go, programming isn’t really my thing. But this program is amazing.
I tried to build an arc with regular code and i could never could get it to run this smooth.
